Winter Gear

Image
Greetings Geeks, Some geeks are pretty resistant to going outdoors. Whilst some other geeks are all about getting their "Extreme" on. Kristen Bean had a chance to head up to Colorado to check out some winter tech gear and she gave us the inside scoop. Spring may be upon us but there is still plenty of time to get your snowboarding and skiing in before the snows melt away. Hit the jump for the full report.

Avengers Clip - Thor and Captain America do battle

Image
Greetings Geeks, The marketing machine is in full swing for The Avengers. There have been tons of behind the scenes footage, clips, TV Spots, and featurettes. Disney is not taking any chances with this one (especially after the bomb of John Carter of Mars). Anyway, here is another clip. But this one just screamed EPIC to me. Hit the jump to see the goods.

Greetings Geeks, Voice over work is one of the rare jobs in Hollywood where you are a star...but nobody knows what you look like...and may not even know your name. I Know That Voice is a documentary about just that profession. It's a nice look at the inner workings of voice over and the supremely talented folks that do it. Hit the jump to view the trailer. It's filled with tons of voice talent that I am certain you will know.

Google+ gets a major update

Image
Greetings Geeks! It's no secret that I am a huge supporter of Google+. It's where the Grotto posts most of it's content. Facebook is nice, but where Facebook is like a family bar-b-que, Google+ is like a local coffee house. The people you meet on Google+ most likely aren't your family members. Oh they come to the coffee house as well, but you often find yourself talking to people who you ordinarily would never have met before. That's what I like about it. But I digress.... Engadget reported today that Google updated its flagship social product. As with most Mountain View projects, the new Google+ will rollout gradually. The UI has been given a major overhaul with a customizable shortcuts on the left and your buddy list moved to the right. The Hangouts feature will be getting their own dedicated home page too, allowing you to quickly peruse any Hangouts that are available to you. Even profiles are getting a dramatic facelift with larger photos and Sparks hav

Review - Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 8 Library Edition Volume 1 HC

Image
Buffy the Vampire Slayer was a HUGE phenomenon in the '90s. It spawned a spin off series (Angel) and saw it's way to 7 successful seasons. Unfortunately, the fans and creator Joss Whedon wanted more. So it was several years later that Joss finally got his chance to create Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Season 8...as a comic book. Dark Horse comics has now collected the first two arcs of Season 8, plus two one-shots into a gorgeous hard cover book. Hit the jump for my full review.

Toshiba announces Excite 10, 7.7 and 13 tablets

Image
Greetings Geeks, Engadget posted some interesting news today. After Toshiba's Thrive tablets were widely panned by tech reviewers and critics alike, Toshiba decided to go back to the drawing board. The Thrive has dgone the way of the Dodo and Toshiba now brings us the Excite 7.7, 10 and 13 . All three will have NVIDIA's Tegra 3 and Ice Cream Sandwich. The 13-incher steps up to 1600 x 900 resolution (as opposed to 1280 x 800) . Both the 10 and 13" sport a full-sized SD slot. However there was no room for full-sized USB and HDMI ports on tablets this thin. Notice that I kept bolding the 13 inch tablet . I understand that in a lot of cases "Bigger is better" but why would you want such a large tablet? Especially at the hefty price tag of $650 for 32GB or $750 for 64GB? I pose that question to you readers. What do you need a 13" Tablet for? Price points for the Excite 7.7: $500 for 16GB. $580 for 32GB. The Excite 10 starts at $500 for 16GB. $530 f

Berserk Trilogy coming to 16 countries

Image
Greetings Geeks, In my usual daily Anime news fix, I stumbled upon the exciting news that the Berserk Trilogy of films based on the Kentaro Miura manga will be getting a 16 country release. Viz Media announced that they would be releasing the film in North America during their panel at Sakura-Con on Saturday. Berserk has been licensed for release in North America, Canada, Russia, UK, France, Germany, Austria, Italy, Switzerland, Spain, Portugal, Belgium, Netherlands, Sweden, Australia, and South Korea. A release date for any of these regions has not been announced but the good folks Viz announced that their North American edition would be out this fall. Berserk Ōgon Jidai-Hen I: Haō no Tamago opened in Japan on February 4. The film will be released on Blu-ray and DVD in Japan on May 23. Berserk Ōgon Jidai-Hen II: Doldrey Kōryaku (Berserk Golden Age Arc II: The Battle for Doldrey) will be released in theaters in Japan on June 23. It focuses on the epic battle by the King

BBC angry with David Tennant?

Image
Greetings Geeks! Whovians the world over know and love David Tennant's performance of the wonderful time traveling lord of Gallifrey, Doctor Who. Well, British Tabloid The Mirror is reporting that the BBC is not too happy with David Tennant's recent Tivo commercial. According to the Mirror, the BBC feels that it is far too close to the portrayal of Dr. Who's 10th Doctor for which Tennant is widely known. We have the embed after the jump and I have to say that as good of an ad as it is, I don't really see the Doctor in it. I mean, Tennant's even using his normal Scottish accent. I don't know...Hit the jump to watch the embed and let us know what you think. Is Tennant channeling too much Doctor Who for this ad? And take it with a grain of salt. I mean, this IS The Mirror we are talking about.

Facebook buys Instagram

Image
Greetings Geeks! The big news of the day is Instagram! Social media giant Facebook has bought the photo sharing app for a cool $1,000,000,000. That's $1 Billion! Facebook has no intention of closing the site or the app and also has no intention of limiting it's integration with competing social networks. But this does bring up an interesting thought. Google+ has Picasa integrated with it's Picnik image editor. This allows G+ users to do pretty much all the same things as Instagram. I wouldn't be surprised to see Facebook try integrating Instagram's feature set to it's own social network as a ways of competing. Not that they need it. But Zuckerberg must be sweating Google's social behemoth, otherwise, why bother? Especially with the price tag. What do you guys think?

Updated: Question: Should A Cosplayer Be Kicked Out Of PAX East For Doing Her Job?

Image
Day 1 Left, Day 2 Right Just to be clear, Jessica Nigri was asked to leave and change, she was allowed back in... But on day 1 of PAX east, she went dressed as Lollipop Chainsaw's star, Juliet Starling, without issue. Day 2 she went dressed as the same character in one of the multiple alt costumes and asked to leave to change. She returned in the cheerleader uniform from day 1 she was asked to change again, cover up, or leave entirely! Did I mention she was at the WB Games booth and is the official character model for the game? So what's the point of this post? Most of the Grotto staff come from a place in the US where people can go grocery shopping wearing A LOT less than what Nigri had on! Now if she were dressed in one of the alternate costumes from Dead or Alive Extreme Beach Volleyball, then I can understand the issue. What do you guys think? Let us know in the comments below or on Google+ and after the break, see Nigri's Day 3 costume! Updated 4/9/2012: Added
